Xmen Apocalypse

Xmen has been a thousand times better since its relaunch with First Class. Don't get me wrong, I like the older films, but they had glaring inaccuracies and at times a terrible script, which was only glossed over because of great performances by the likes of Sir Patrick Stewart, Sir Ian McKellen etc.

Apocalypse set the bar for itself pretty high. After 'days of future past' it had some pretty amazing boots to fill and quick. Getting straight in to the backstory in Ancient Egypt, (the MCU seems to be learning from past failures) it shows off the brilliance of its CGI and costume design in the first half hour. The cinematography is top notch and you really can't get lost in the storyline, saying that, there are periods where we could be almost made to feel like we are treading water slightly. A slow middle part of the script brings us down a little bit, but after *spoilers* the Institute is blown to smitherines, with a delightful Quicksilver segment, akin to 'days of future past', it picks up the pace and starts to drive everything forward.

Apocalypse does have a solid script, Nightcrawler (one of my personal favourites from the comics) has been executed better than before. With a solid performance from Kodi Smit-Mcphee. In fact it's almost difficult to pick a weak link in the cast, as with the originals, there's always a character that ruins it, but for the first time, we have a Jean Gray that actually works. Don't get me wrong, the character, no matter what actress plays her, is annoying, but Sophie Turner manages to somehow make her slightly less of an annoyance and even the script seems to be more rounded to make her more relevent and useful.

I struggled to find something I disliked about the movie, til the very end. *Spoilers* The whole Brother-Sister bond between Magneto and Mystique almost making the final battle with Apocalypse, almost cheapens it, the "There's good in you, Eric" line from Xavier, an cheesey sort of technique to instantly change the mind of Magneto, pretty much makes every scene the Apocalypse shared with Magneto beforehand, almost pointless. At the same time making Magneto look too easily influenced abd manipulated.

Character designs continue to impress in this new run for the Xmen, the scripts do continuously get better, they aren't filled with clichès or just out of character remarks that the original trilogy sometimes suffered from.
A solid outing, but perhaps, just falls shy of the quality of 'Days of future past".
